I grew up in Michigan messing about in canoes on lakes and class II water. I headed west in 1979, where I did my first whitewater rafting in the Western Grand Canyon. I was hooked. Since then I’ve paddled, rowed rafts, canoes, and kayaks, on rivers, lakes and streams all over western North America. I can think of nothing better than floating. I spend a fair bit of time these days sea kayaking— mostly south in the Sea of Cortez—but I keep coming back to the Grand Canyon. There is something about the place that won’t let go. I’ve been working summers with CanX since 1991. When I’m not boating I spend my time in Prescott, Arizona where I teach college chemistry and live in a log and stone home I started building way back when—it seems there is always still a bit more to do.
