Sam has been guiding in the Grand Canyon in some capacity or another since 1984. Way back then, the Canyon was not nearly as geologically old as it is now. Like the lines on Sam’s face, the Canyons are much deeper and wider nowadays. Working as boatman has always contributed to helping Sam have the time and means to paint. He shows his paintings in his hometown of Flagstaff at West of the Moon Gallery. When not guiding or painting, he enjoy spending time with his girlfriend Melissa, a botanist who he met while surveying plants in the Grand Canyon for the National Park Service.
